The Following Information is Needed to Properly Select a Transformer
1) What is the measured amperage going to the hot wire when the wire is at least as hot as you need it?
2) What is the measured voltage required for the amperage in (1)?
3) What is the length of hot wire in (1)?
3) What is the length of hot wire in (1)?
With this information we can determine:

Maximum Amperage
-
Volts per foot required for the hot wire

Proper VARIAC variable transformer
If the voltage is relatively low for the length of wire you will be using it is often best to use:
One of our Variac variable transformers feeding an appropriate step-down transformer feeding the hot wire. This will reduce the size and cost of the variable transformer. It will also allow you to have a larger adjustment range on the Variac
General Information Relating to Hot Wire Applications:
We can test a sample of your hot wire if you wish. We would need you to send a 2-3' sample of the wire that you are using.
Running a longer wire of the same gauge at the same temperature does not increase the amperage requirement. The voltage will need to be increased to achieve the same amperage and thus the same temperature.
If a higher wire temperature is required the amperage & voltage will need to be increased.
